18.11.23 vs Stapenhill

Stalemate at Stapenhill

Sutton United came away from Maple Grove with a hard-earned point in a tough mid-table match against Stapenhill.

On a very heavy pitch it was the home side who began the brightest and it wasn’t long before Sutton’s keeper Connor Byrne, on his debut for the First Team, was called into action with a terrific save to deny George Teeney.

Jonny Grigg was playing in his preferred number 10 role for Sutton and was instrumental in the opening goal in the 17th minute. Running onto Mark Moore’s ball over the top, Grigg was strong enough to beat his defender and with Paul Hollis off his line to challenge, the ball then fell kindly for Tom Cullen to slot into an empty net for his second goal of the season.

The hosts equalised in the 38th minute when Samuel Birks glanced his header into the roof of the net from a corner kick.

There were several big decisions made in the match that frustrated both sides, one of which happened just before the break when Swans captain Charlie Rumin was lucky to only receive a yellow card when he brought down Grigg, who would have been through on goal.

Central defender Mark Moore picked up an injury at the end of the first half and did not come out for the restart. With a shortage of defenders on the bench, Kye Billingham-Belle replaced him with a very solid performance at right back.

Sutton also gave a debut to winger Kyle Hayden, who was previously playing for Romulus, and his pace up front caused problems for the home side during the second half.

Both sides had to work hard with some good football despite the conditions. Stapenhill twice hit the woodwork with shots from distance and for Sutton, Joe Gildea tested the keeper from the edge of the box and saw an effort wide of the target under challenge from Rumin.
Next Saturday Sutton turn their attention to the Fazeley Charity Cup when they take on fellow MFL 1 side Coton Green at Coleshill Road with a 3.30pm kick off.
