Paul Burke took on the leadership of Sutton United’s newly formed Under 21s side for the 2025/26 season, supported by Steve Billington, Oscar Lugg, and Harry Tuffield. From the outset, the creation of the U21s was a moment of real pride for the club, with the squad built predominantly around players graduating from our Under 18s programme. This provided a vital and long-term pathway, allowing our young players the opportunity to bridge the gap between youth and adult football within a familiar and supportive environment.
In their inaugural season, the Under 21s rose to the challenge of a demanding Midland Football League division, finishing a highly respectable 7th place. Competing in a long, physically tough campaign, the side gained exactly the type of exposure and experience the club had envisioned—laying strong foundations for future success while accelerating individual development.
Building on that platform, Paul Burke entered the team’s second season in the MFL Division North with renewed ambition and confidence, once again supported by Steve Billington and Oscar Lugg. Pre-season saw the squad further strengthened, with additional players progressing through our youth setup alongside a small number of carefully selected local additions. With a strong core group now firmly established, Paul and his coaching team recognised a genuine opportunity to push on and compete in the 2024/25 season.
The Under 21s programme has already proven to be a major success in its early years, creating a clear, structured pathway from U7s right through to First Team football. The current squad includes more than ten players who have progressed directly from our youth teams, while several others have already gained valuable First Team experience. The group continues to provide strong support across the club, including meaningful contributions alongside the Reserves.
The intensity and quality of football at Under 21s level is setting our players up perfectly for the future, ensuring Sutton United continues to develop well-rounded, competitive footballers capable of strengthening the First Team for years to come.
