07.09.2024 vs Saffron Dynamo

Defeat at Dynamo

Andrew Delaney8 Sep – 16:40

It was a damp and miserable day all round for Sutton as they conceded five goals away at Saffron Dynamo.

Sutton made a disastrous start as they went behind in the third minute when Jack Blanksby headed in a free kick for the hosts.

Saffron went on to dominate the first half, with Mack Armstrong denied by Connor Byrne and a great chance for Jake Woolley at the back post who could only hit the woodwork.

United had their moments, as Joe Gildea’s dangerous cross was cleared by Blanksby ahead of Hayden Froggatt, and when Jake Murrell picked out Gildea in the penalty box, his shot was well saved by keeper Louis Harris.

The hosts doubled their lead just before the break, when an excellent through ball had Woolley in behind United’s back line and his cross was then sliced into his own net by Sutton defender Murrell.

Sutton made four substitutions for the restart alongside a change in shape that saw them have the better of the next thirty minutes. Sam Jeeves came close with an effort from the edge of the penalty box, and Matt Bishop’s low shot from 20 yards was gathered by Harris, after a good interchange on the left between Murrell and Jack Whelan.

Then in the 64th minute, Saffron countered from a Sutton corner kick and Tion Pearce sprinted from one box to the other, to make the final clearance that denied the hosts a third goal.

United came close again when Jeeves saw his header saved by Harris after good work from Tom Massey to drive into the box and cross towards the back post.

However, Sutton couldn’t find a way through a well organised Dynamo defence and when Jude Coates netted a third goal for the hosts in the 74th minute, that effectively put the match out of Suttons reach.

Dynamo went on to finish strongly, with substitute Billy Harrison finding the net in the 83rd minute after Armstrong’s cut back at the byline.

Saffron then added a fifth with the last kick of the match when a long ball over the top was picked up by Coates on the halfway line and with Byrne charging out of his area, the substitute guided the ball into an open net.

Sutton return home for their next match on Tuesday 10th September when they host Stapenhill with a 7.45pm kick off.
