04.11.23 vs Shawbury United

Sutton sunk by Shawbury

Andrew Delaney5 Nov 2023 –

It was a disappointing home defeat for a wasteful Sutton United who conceded four goals against Shawbury United at Coleshill Road

Sutton, who had 17 shots to Shawbury’s five, were punished by some clinical finishing from four different Shawbury goal scorers.

Sutton made a positive start, taking an early lead when Joe Gildea headed home an Ethan Hanks corner.

Then against the run of play, Shawbury scored two goals in five minutes to turn the match around. Sutton gave away possession to gift Reece Jacobs a run at goal and with only the keeper to beat, he made no mistake with the finish.

The visitors took the lead in the 13th minute when a ricochet fell kindly for Jack Howse to curl a fantastic shot into the top corner of Sutton’s net from twenty-five yards out.

Sutton’s leading goal scorer Gildea looked their most dangerous threat as he had a goal disallowed for offside and then hit the crossbar with a rasping shot as he drove into the box.

However, it was the visitors who scored again just before the break, when a free kick was finished by David Howells who headed in from two yards.

Sutton went further behind within fifteen seconds of the restart when Shawbury broke down the right flank before Brendon Price curled a shot from the edge of the box to give the visitors a commanding three goal lead.

Things went from bad to worse for the hosts when defender Matt Bishop saw red in the 74th minute. Yet despite all this, Sutton still created some fantastic opportunities to score and rescue something from the match. Both Gildea and Tom Massey had efforts go wide of the target and Jonny Grigg, attacking down the left flank, saw a shot saved by Max Williams at his near post and another effort skim narrowly wide of the far post.

Sutton were boosted by the return of Jake Murrell and Tom Cullen from injury, and it was Murrell’s cross in the 92nd minute that Gildea swept home to pull a goal back for the hosts.

With time running out, Sutton had another two great chances in added time, as Williams was off his line quickly to deny Grigg once more and Kye Billingham-Belle volleyed over from close range, with the visitors holding on to take home all three points.

Sutton now have a weekend off with their next match away at Stapenhill on Saturday 18th November.
