Sutton Deliver Five-Star Performance

Sutton United produced a dominant display on home soil as they swept aside Coventry Copsewood 5-0, in what was undoubtedly their most commanding performance of the season.

The result marked their 14th league win of the campaign, whilst scoring eight goals in their last two matches, which highlights United’s growing momentum as the season progresses.

Tom Massey opened the scoring midway through the first half with his fifth goal of the season, before a Joe Gildea brace put Sutton firmly in control. Late goals from substitutes Dylan Green and Oli Jeeves added to an emphatic scoreline in front of a jubilant home crowd.

United made two changes to their starting line-up, with Gabe Newey returning in goal to deliver another clean sheet, and up front Gildea led the line and proved a constant threat throughout.

Sutton started with real purpose, setting a high tempo from the off. Early chances came when skipper Tom Massey volleyed over from an Aidan Mee cross, before Gildea was denied by a superb save from the Copsewood goalkeeper, Logan Elliott.

The pressure finally told in the 27th minute, when James Spruce drove from one flank to the other, riding a fortunate ricochet, before cutting the ball back from the byline for Massey to finish from close range, smashing home to give Sutton a deserved lead.

Just before the break, Sutton doubled their lead when a well-delivered corner from Ollie Burgundy found Gildea, who rose highest to nod the ball in ahead of the goalkeeper, sending United into the break with a comfortable cushion.

It was a quiet afternoon for Sutton’s goalkeeper, Gabe Newey, although he needed to track back in the 43rd minute to catch an audacious effort from Archie Gallacher who had spotted him off his line.

Three minutes after the restart, Gildea had his second and Sutton’s third. A patient passing move found Lewis Wall in a central position, who threaded the ball into the box for Gildea to spin his marker and rifle home. The striker was inches away from a hat-trick minutes later, when his left-footed effort beat the keeper but came crashing back off the far post.
Sutton didn’t let up, making all their substitutions by the hour mark and continuing to pile pressure on their visitors. Massey came close again with a header straight at Elliott, while Harry Howard and Harry Manton joined in the attack, both denied a goal with impressive saves from the Copsewood goalkeeper.

The fourth goal finally arrived in the 81st minute after a sustained spell of possession. Dylan Green netted his first goal for the club when he picked up the ball on the edge of the area and drove a precise finish into the bottom corner.

United rounded off the scoring in stoppage time, as Wall and Jeeves harried Copsewood into surrendering possession at the edge of their penalty area, with Jeeves firing in off the post to seal a dominant win for the Greens.

Gildea earned a deserved Club Man-of-the-Match for his tireless running and clinical brace, while Lewis Wall and Lewis Hayden were outstanding in midfield, dictating the tempo and linking play superbly.

Substitutes made a decisive impact, highlighting the strength and depth available. However, the only blot on an otherwise perfect afternoon was the sight of Leyton Hines limping off late on, with Sutton forced to see out the final minutes with ten men after using all their substitutes.

After the game, joint manager Richard Heath praised his side’s performance, saying “that was probably one of our best performances of the season”.

Sutton now turn their attention to a tough trip away next Saturday 11th October, as they face Birstall United, who currently sit just outside the playoff places.
