Sutton Fight Back to Earn Dramatic Draw
Sutton remain unbeaten at home but miss the chance to go top with a dramatic 2-2 draw as they finish with nine-men against AFC Bridgnorth.
It was a frustrating afternoon for United, who twice came from behind but were ultimately left to rue missed opportunities, having to battle through the final quarter of the match with nine men.
The game got off to a nightmare start for the hosts as AFC Bridgnorth opened the scoring inside just three minutes. Nicholas Turton broke in behind the Sutton backline and rifled a shot from the edge of the box, and despite Gabe Newey getting his fingers to it, the powerful strike still dipped to nestle in the back of the net.
Sutton responded with some pressure of their own, coming close when Reiss Hick struck a powerful header from the left of goal, only for Harvey Evans to clear in front of his goalkeeper.
Bridgnorth continued to look dangerous, particularly through winger Joel Westwood, who forced a solid save from Newey after a surging run and shot in the 10th minute. Soon after, Mitchell Bradford drove through the middle for the visitors, before Hick made a vital last-ditch block to deny him.
United found their equaliser in the 17th minute when Tion Pearce delivered a quality cross from the left, which deflected off Joe Prosser, allowing Joe Gildea to react quickly and tap in at the near post passed Craig Pain.
Despite the equaliser, Bridgnorth enjoyed the better of the chances in the first half, frequently turning over possession and keeping Sutton’s centre-backs Hick and Matt Bishop busy with crucial interventions. Isaiah Beaumont came closest to restoring the lead for the visitors, curling a long-range effort just over the bar near the end of the half.
And at the other end of the pitch, Sutton enjoyed a lot of possession yet struggled to build consistent momentum going forward, often being caught offside by a well-organised Bridgnorth defence.
United came out positively after the break and Gildea came close to a second, glancing a header just wide after a spell of composed build-up play. Yet Bridgnorth continued to threaten, and Beaumont again went close, this time firing just over from left of the goal.
As the rain began to pour midway through the half, AFC Bridgnorth retook the lead with a break-away goal. Captain Mitchel Bradford received the ball at the edge of the box and found the bottom far corner with a precise finish.

And just as a rainbow appeared above the ground, Sutton found their own spark of hope. In the 73rd minute, Aidan Mee beat his marker on the right and delivered a pinpoint cross for Oli Jeeves, who slotted home from close range to bring Sutton level once again.
However, the hosts’ momentum was short-lived. Just four minutes later, Ollie Burgundy received a second yellow card for a challenge on Joe Prosser, moments after his initial shot had been brilliantly saved by Pain. And the situation worsened soon after, when Oli Jeeves was sin-binned for dissent, reducing Sutton to nine men for the final ten minutes.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, United showed fantastic resilience and defended valiantly, denying Bridgnorth any clear-cut chances in the closing stages to secure a hard-fought point.
While Sutton will be disappointed not to have taken all three points, the result maintains their unbeaten home record and keeps them firmly in the mix for promotion.
Next up for Sutton is a trip to Cradley Town on Tuesday 16th September for a 7.45pm kick-off.
