14.02.2026 Vs AFC Kilworth

United Held in Valentine’s Stalemate

Sutton United were left frustrated on Valentine’s Day as they were held to a goalless draw at home by a stubborn AFC North Kilworth side.

The Greens dominated possession from the outset, moving the ball with confidence and produced some exciting passages of play. However, despite creating enough opportunities to secure all three points, they were unable to find the clinical edge in the final third against a well-organised Kilworth side who defended resolutely and in numbers throughout.

Kilworth goalkeeper Sam Rushby proved to be the standout performer for the visitors, as he twice denied Joe Gildea from close range with sharp reflex saves, before producing a superb diving stop to keep out a thumping strike from Lewis Hayden.

Rushby and his back line were called into action repeatedly as Sutton pressed for a way through, with chances also falling to Red Simmons, Jay Clement, and Aidan Mee.

The visitors created very few chances in front of goal with their best opportunities coming from set pieces, and in the 22nd minute they came close when Dom Lanni met a corner with a strong header that looked destined for the net, but both Hayden and Mee were back defending on the goal line for Sutton and they did well to clear the danger.

United made an early change in the second half, introducing forward Oli Jeeves in a bid to increase their fire power. However, as Sutton continued to push, Kilworth sat deep with eleven men behind the ball, which made it increasingly difficult to find space in and around the penalty area.

Perhaps Sutton’s best chance of the match came when Gildea produced a strong turn on the edge of the box before striking an excellent effort towards the far corner, only for Rushby to pull off another superb save. Tom Massey then saw a terrific volley from just outside the area whistle narrowly wide, while a similar effort from Ben George took a deflection off Jordan McCourt and skimmed past the post.

At the other end, Greg Lewis endured a relatively quiet afternoon in the Sutton goal, with his only significant involvement coming in the 70th minute when Kilworth broke quickly on the counterattack and Lewis remained alert to save at his near post, denying Lucas Waring from 18 yards.
United continued to press until the final whistle as a Gildea header drifted wide, while Mee scooped an effort over the bar after good work down the right from Matt Bishop and Oli Jeeves. The Greens also had a late penalty shout waved away after Mee appeared to be brought down while dribbling through a crowded penalty area.

In the end, it felt like two points dropped for Sutton, who controlled large spells and looked strong in possession. Yet despite this, it was another positive performance from the Greens as they look to build momentum. Credit must also go to Kilworth for their disciplined defensive display and determination to secure a valuable point on the road.

Next up for Sutton is a local derby away to Smethwick Rangers at the Amber Arena in Sutton Coldfield on Saturday 21st February with kick off 3pm.
