21.10.2026 Vs Darlaston Town

Lewis Wall grabbed a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser as Sutton United battled back with ten men to claim a deserved point in a thrilling six-goal encounter at Darlaston Town on Wednesday evening.
The Greens looked on course for all three points after establishing a two-goal lead through Jayden Hunter and Aidan Mee during an impressive first-half display. However, Oli Jeeves pulled one back for Darlaston on the brink of half time, before the game swung dramatically following Hunter’s second-half dismissal, allowing the hosts to fight back before Wall’s late goal secured a share of the spoils.
This was a vastly different Darlaston side to the one Sutton defeated 6-1 back in August. Under new management and with a largely rebuilt squad, the hosts showed far greater organisation and attacking threat throughout an entertaining contest.
United made a positive start and almost opened the scoring after just two minutes when Red Simmons swung a long throw into the danger area and Lewis Hayden’s half-volley flashed narrowly wide of the post.
Sutton took the lead in the 12th minute when Aidan Mee intercepted possession near the halfway line and immediately released Hunter with an excellent pass forward. As the goalkeeper and defender hesitated, Hunter reacted quickest to confidently slot the ball past Tom Carter and into the back of the net.
United continued to look dangerous and almost doubled their lead when captain Tom Massey lobbed an effort over the keeper and just wide of the target. The Greens did find a second on 27 minutes following a swift counterattack. Aidan Mee surged forward from midfield before feeding Hunter on the right wing, and his cross found Hayden, whose low effort was parried by Carter, with the rebound falling perfectly for Aidan Mee to convert from close range and register his third goal of the campaign.
Darlaston gradually worked their way back into the contest and finished the half strongly. Their pressure was rewarded just before the break when a corner from the left caused problems inside the Sutton penalty area, allowing former Greens striker Jeeves to finish from six yards and reduce the deficit.
Sutton responded well after the break and came close to restoring their two-goal cushion when James Gallagher rose superbly to meet a free-kick delivery from Hayden, only for Carter to produce an excellent save and tip the header over the bar.
Then in the 58th minute, Hunter was shown a red card following a high challenge on Carter as both players competed for the ball just outside the penalty area, leaving Sutton to play the final half hour with ten men.
Momentum swung towards the hosts, as Zico Agyemang went close with a strike from distance that drifted inches wide, while Ben McSkeane glanced a header off target.
To their credit, Sutton defended resolutely and worked tirelessly to frustrate Darlaston, but the pressure eventually told with 15 minutes remaining when the hosts were awarded a penalty for a misjudged aerial challenge from Lewis. Jeeves stepped forward and calmly converted to bring his side level at 2-2.
Sensing victory, Darlaston continued to push forward and appeared to have completed the turnaround in the 86th minute. Substitute Abdul Bashiru won possession on the left before driving into the area and finishing superbly to put the hosts ahead for the first time.
Many sides would have folded at that point, but Sutton showed tremendous character, and deep into added time, Greg Lewis delivered a dangerous free kick into the penalty area which sparked a frantic scramble in front of goal. Gallagher’s effort was blocked on the line, but Wall reacted brilliantly to force home the loose ball and spark celebrations among the travelling support.
The late leveller ensured Sutton left the Tactica Sports Stadium with a thoroughly deserved point after a spirited display and sets them up nicely for their next match against Runcorn Town on Saturday 24 October.
