22.09.2026 Vs Uttoxeter Town

United’s recent signing Afful scored the second of two first half goals, with Joe Gildea converting an early penalty in a dominant first half performance by the Greens. However, it was Uttoxeter who impressed in the second half, as they went down to ten men before pulling a goal back through Frank Lovett and pushing Sutton to the final whistle.

United started brightly and went ahead within six minutes when Gildea was brought down by goalkeeper Charlie Wood. The Sutton frontman stepped up and converted the penalty to give the Greens an early advantage.

Afful soon looked a threat as he tried his luck from distance, and a Red Simmons effort from the left of goal was deflected wide off William Minton.

The Greens continued to press, and their dominance was rewarded on 33 minutes when Simmons won possession and released Aidan Mee, who drove into the box and set up Afful to fire home his first goal for the club.

Sutton threatened a third before the break, when Afful’s shot was blocked in front of goal, and the follow-up from Tom Massey drew a great save from Wood. United looked lively and went into the break with a comfortable two-goal lead.

The second half began with Sutton again on the front foot, as Massey played a clever back heel for Gildea in the box, but his shot was brilliantly blocked by Shamuna Issah Addo Manu ahead of his keeper.

Uttoxeter were reduced to ten men on 58 minutes when Minton was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Simmons, but the dismissal seemed to galvanize the hosts. Uttoxeter were much improved after the sending off and pulled one back with nine minutes remaining, as Frank Lovett slotted home his first for the club after a good move down the right.

Despite the resurgence from the hosts, Sutton still carved out opportunities of their own. Gildea had two great chances, as first Lewis Hayden released him with a clever flick over the Uttoxeter defence only for Wood to make another strong save, and shortly after, the Sutton forward headed narrowly wide from Sean Devlin’s inviting cross.

Matt Bishop was unfortunate not to score for the Greens, with a couple of great headers at the back post off set pieces that Wood proved equal to.

Uttoxeter finished strongly but Sutton stood firm, and the two first half goals proved enough for the Greens to record a run of four straight victories. Next up for United is a home tie on Saturday 26th September against Northwich Victoria kick off 3pm.
