15.09.2026 Vs Romulus

In a tight contest with little between the sides, Bishop rose highest at the near post to guide home a long throw from Red Simmons, securing United’s passage in a game where the club’s young talent shone throughout.

With five Under-21 players involved, it was a strong night for the club’s pathway: Gabe Newey, James Gallagher, Ethan Mee, Cian Tevlin and First Team debutant Ethan Reynolds, all played their part in a competitive encounter. Alongside the youngsters, new signing Joseph Kwarteng also made his debut after impressing for the Under-21’s at the weekend, while Ryan Nesbitt returned from injury to bolster the attack.

The first half produced few clear chances for either side. Romulus threatened early when Tevin Myers cut the ball back for Joe Morley, only for Gallagher to make a crucial block for United. Moments later, Lewis Riley-Stewart volleyed over from a corner as the hosts looked dangerous from set pieces.

Sutton worked hard but couldn’t test Callum Smith, with long-range efforts from Simmons and Nesbitt the closest they came. Joe Gildea did find the net after being played through by Nesbitt, but the flag was raised for offside.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with both teams battling for control. Jack White and Reynolds both impressed in midfield, while Gildea drove forward after a clever flick-on from Sean Devlin, but saw his effort saved. Youngster Ethan Mee, also returning from injury, went close to a goal in the 55th minute, firing just over from the right side of the box.

The breakthrough arrived on 65 minutes, when Simmons launched a long throw into the area and Bishop, with his back to goal, produced a brilliant header over Smith to give the Greens the lead.

United’s substitutes added fresh energy late on. Kwarteng won possession centrally and released Jayden Hunter, only for Riley-Stewart to recover with a vital challenge to keep the hosts in the match.

Romulus pushed hard in stoppage time, forcing a scramble in the Sutton box, but the Greens stood firm to protect their clean sheet, with Newey making the final stop to deny Charlie Gardiner from close range.

United return to league action on Saturday 19th September, hosting fourth-place Brocton at Coleshill Road, kick off 3pm.
