12.09.2026 Vs Dudley Town

After a weekend off and with key players returning to the squad, including two new signings adding fresh energy, the Greens looked revitalised. Debutants Joseph Afful and Sean Devlin impressed throughout, offering pace, creativity and a constant threat in wide areas.

Sutton started on the front foot, as Devlin’s clever work on the left created an early chance for Jayden Hunter, whose acrobatic effort from close range cleared over the bar. Hunter went close again moments later, dragging a shot narrowly wide after another sharp move involving Devlin.

Dudley played some nice football but were limited to sporadic chances in front of goal, with Matt Bishop blocking well from Jonathan Millinchip and Omario Ford volleying over from the left.

Sutton began to up the tempo, with Ben George seeing his effort from the edge of the box blocked by James Hales, before Devlin’s follow-up was again blocked, this time by Callum Lee for Dudley.

United’s pressure told six minutes before the break, when Hunter beat his man brilliantly on the left and squared across goal for captain Tom Massey, who tucked home his fifth of the season to give United the lead.

Dudley opened the second half with a low strike from Ford that forced Gabe Newey into action, diving down to save at his bottom right corner.

Sutton soon began to reassert control, with Aidan Mee testing Joseph Cunneen with a strike at a tight angle from the right of goal, and shortly after, Hunter’s driving run from halfway ended with another save from the visiting keeper.

Cunneen produced a superb stop to claw away Matt Bishop’s powerful header on 64 minutes, but he was beaten two minutes later by a moment of real quality, when Lewis Hayden unleashed a stunning 25-yard strike into the top corner to double Sutton’s advantage.

Afful continued to impress, going close to a debut goal with a fierce effort from distance, before winning a penalty with a clever run into the 18-yard box in the 80th minute. Substitute Joe Gildea stepped up to confidently fire home the spot kick and seal a much-need win for the Greens.

A first clean sheet since 4th August and a strong all-round display give Sutton momentum heading into Tuesday night’s FA Senior Challenge Cup tie against local rivals Romulus (7.45pm KO).
